The questions to expect
A couple walks in with £3,000 and 'somewhere hot in October'. Talk me through your consultation.
Questions before brochures: who's travelling, what does a perfect day look like, beach or exploring, flight tolerance — then two or three tailored options, not ten.
Which destinations do you know well enough to sell from experience — and what would you recommend for a honeymoon in February?
Sell one destination properly: seasonality, flight time, a specific hotel or area, why February works. Some agencies follow up with a geography quiz — revise your map.
Tell me about turning an enquiry into a booking. What moved them from browsing to buying?
Name the moment of commitment and what created it — urgency used honestly (real availability), an option narrowed, a deposit made easy. Numbers help.
Describe a travel emergency you handled — a cancellation, a strike, a customer stranded abroad.
Show the calm sequence: customer safe and informed first, rebooking options worked in parallel, and the follow-up that turned a disaster into loyalty.
Have you used GDS or tour-operator booking systems? And how do you explain ATOL and ABTA protection to a nervous customer?
Name your systems honestly, then do the ATOL explanation in one customer-friendly sentence — financial protection if the operator fails. Clarity here is the test.
A customer found the same holiday £150 cheaper online. What do you actually say?
Don't rubbish the website — sell the difference: protection, a human when things go wrong, your knowledge, price-match if policy allows. Give the words, warmly.
Tell me about talking a customer out of the holiday they asked for — and into the one that was right.
The best agent stories are gentle course-corrections: the mismatch you spotted, how you raised it without judgement, and the thank-you afterwards.
Why travel — and how does your own travelling make you better at selling it?
Passion is expected; usefulness impresses. Connect a trip you took to a booking you could sell better because of it.
Customers now arrive with an AI-planned itinerary. What does a human agent add — and how do you handle correcting the AI's mistakes without embarrassing the customer?2026
Validate their research first, then add what AI can't: live prices and availability, protection, judgement about what they'll actually enjoy — and fix errors tactfully.
Tell me about a time you turned an angry customer around.
The pivot moment is the story: what you said after listening that changed the temperature. End with how the customer left the interaction.
How do you handle a customer you genuinely cannot help — when the answer really is no?
A good no has three parts: empathy first, the clear reason, then what you CAN do — an alternative, an escalation route, a next step.
A customer is rambling and your queue is building. How do you take control of the conversation politely?
Name the technique: summarise what you've heard, ask a closed question, signpost the next step. Control without rudeness is a learnable craft — show you've learned it.
