The questions to expect
What's the difference between internal and external audit, and why do you want this side of it?
Internal: continuous, improvement-focused, reports to the audit committee. External: independent opinion on the accounts. Then commit to your side with a reason.
Walk me through how you'd plan an audit of an area you've never looked at before.
Understand the process, identify key risks, map controls, set materiality, then design tests to match. Risk-based, not checklist-based, is the phrase to earn.
What are audit assertions, and how would you test completeness versus existence?
Direction of testing is the trick: existence traces from records to reality; completeness from reality back to records. A stock-count example makes it concrete.
Tell me about a time the evidence didn't support what management told you. What did you do?
Stay respectful in the telling: you extended testing, corroborated independently, escalated with facts. Scepticism without accusation is the professional line.
Describe a time you had to raise a difficult finding with a client or senior colleague.
Show you led with evidence, gave them room to respond, and kept the relationship intact. Findings that get fixed — not just reported — are the real result.
Busy season means long hours in small teams. Tell me about keeping a team — or yourself — effective under that kind of load.
Be honest about the grind and concrete about the coping: clear task splits, early flags on overruns, looking after juniors. Realism reassures more than bravado.
You find a misstatement just below materiality and the engagement lead wants to pass on it. What do you do?
Consider qualitative materiality — could it indicate fraud or bias? Document it, aggregate it with other errors, and raise it. 'Below materiality' isn't 'ignore'.
Why audit — and where do you want your training contract to take you?
Audit is the fastest tour of how businesses really work, plus a qualification. Say that in your own words, and be honest about the five-year picture.
Firms now use data analytics and AI to test full populations rather than samples. How does that change the auditor's judgement?2026
Anomaly detection finds more, but deciding what matters stays human. Mention understanding the tools' limits and documenting why you relied on them.
Walk me through the three financial statements and how they link together.
Net income tops the cash flow statement; ending cash lands on the balance sheet; net income also flows to retained earnings. Practise it aloud in under 90 seconds.
What's the difference between profit and cash flow, and why does it matter?
Accruals versus cash timing. Give one concrete example — a profitable firm failing on cash because debtors pay late — and you've shown real understanding.
Tell me about a time you found an error or discrepancy in financial data. What did you do?
Show your method: how you spotted it, traced the cause, corrected it, and what control you added so it can't recur. The control is the impressive part.
