The questions to expect

Talk me through a WSSI — what it tells you and how you'd use it in a Monday trade meeting.

Weekly Sales, Stock and Intake: show you read forward cover and intake against plan, and arrive with actions, not just variances.

A line is selling 30% ahead of forecast. Walk me through what you do — and the risk either way.

Chase or hold is the classic dilemma: check the trend is real, check lead times, size the repeat, and name the terminal-stock risk if it dies.

Tell me about a time your analysis changed a trading decision.

The shape that wins: the number everyone believed, the different number you found, and the decision that changed because you showed it clearly.

Describe a time you were left with overstock. How did you protect margin on the way out?

Show a staged exit — re-flow to stores that sell it, targeted promo before blanket markdown — and the margin points you saved versus panic-clearing.

How would you allocate limited stock of a bestseller across a hundred stores?

Rate-of-sale by store grade, protect flagships and fast sellers, hold some back for reaction. Say what data you'd want before deciding.

Tell me about a time you had to push back on a buyer using the numbers.

The buyer–merchandiser creative tension is the job. Show respect for their instinct, your evidence, and a joint decision you both then owned.

What's your Excel toolkit? Talk me through a report or model you've actually built.

Be concrete: lookups, pivots, SUMIFS at minimum. Describe one real spreadsheet — its inputs, what it calculated, who used it on a Monday.

Why merchandising — what do you enjoy about the numbers side of product?

The honest answer is liking the puzzle: turning messy sales data into a call about next week. Show you've chosen this over buying deliberately.

Planning systems increasingly suggest forecasts and buys automatically. What would make you overrule the system?2026

Systems miss what hasn't happened yet: newness, weather, a competitor closing, a viral moment. Show you audit the machine rather than obey or ignore it.

Describe a time you dealt with a rude or difficult customer.

Stay-calm plus a mechanism: listen fully, acknowledge, offer options, know when to get a manager. End with the customer leaving okay.

A customer wants to refund an item without a receipt and is getting frustrated. What do you do?

Show you know policy exists and you'd follow it kindly — check what proof is acceptable, offer alternatives, escalate before it escalates.

What would you do if you suspected a customer of shoplifting?

The right answer is procedure, not heroics: stay safe, keep observing, use customer service as a deterrent, and report to the manager or security.
