The questions to expect
Tell me about a time attention to detail really mattered in a job — what did you catch?
A miscount, a mislabel, a wrong delivery — small stories are perfect. Show your checking habit, not a one-off fluke.
Describe the busiest delivery day you've worked. How did you get through it?
Show sustainable pace: a sensible order of work, short resets, asking for help at the right moment — not just 'I worked really hard'.
How would you organise a stockroom so the shop floor can find anything fast?
Logic they can picture: group by department, label everything, fastest sellers nearest the door, walkways clear, new delivery never blocking old stock.
What's the safe way to move heavy boxes and work with ladders or roll cages — and what would you refuse to do?
Bend the knees, hold it close, ask for help over your limit, never climb shelving. Saying what you'd refuse shows maturity, not weakness.
A delivery arrives short against the paperwork. What do you do?
Count again, record the discrepancy before signing, tell the supervisor straight away. Never sign clean paperwork for a short delivery.
Tell me about a time you were pulled in two directions — the delivery half-worked and the shop floor calling for stock. What did you do?
Customers can't buy what isn't out: flag it, get the fast-selling gaps filled first, then return to the delivery — and tell people what you're doing.
What appeals to you about stockroom work rather than being on the tills?
Honest answers land: liking physical, organised, heads-down work with visible results. Don't pretend you'd rather be selling.
Stores now pick online orders from the same stock you manage. What does that do to stock accuracy, and how do you protect it?2026
Show you get why one miscount now fails a web customer too: scan everything, work tidy, report discrepancies immediately rather than 'fixing' quietly.
Have you used handheld scanners, RFID or stock apps? How do they change counting and finding stock?2026
Any scanning or app experience counts — name it. If none, say you're quick with tech and give an example of picking up a system fast.
Describe a time you dealt with a rude or difficult customer.
Stay-calm plus a mechanism: listen fully, acknowledge, offer options, know when to get a manager. End with the customer leaving okay.
A customer wants to refund an item without a receipt and is getting frustrated. What do you do?
Show you know policy exists and you'd follow it kindly — check what proof is acceptable, offer alternatives, escalate before it escalates.
What would you do if you suspected a customer of shoplifting?
The right answer is procedure, not heroics: stay safe, keep observing, use customer service as a deterrent, and report to the manager or security.
