Tell me about a lesson you're proud of. What made it work, and how did you know?
A sharp objective, the adaptive moves you made mid-lesson, and evidence of learning — not just engagement. 'They enjoyed it' isn't the result.
Describe a time you turned around the behaviour of a difficult class or child.
Show the mechanism: relationships, routines, consistency over weeks — and the school's behaviour policy as your frame, not your personality as the fix.
Tell me about a time you worked with a parent or carer to support a child.
Pick a genuine partnership: what you shared, what you asked of home, and what changed for the child. Keep it anonymised.
A child in your class says they have a secret about something happening at home. What do you do, exactly?
Be honest you can't keep secrets, listen without leading, reassure them they did right, record verbatim, report to the DSL immediately. This answer is pass/fail.
How do you use assessment day to day to shape what you teach next?
Formative loops: questioning, mini-whiteboards, whole-class feedback, same-day catch-up. Name what you actually do, not the theory.
How do you teach early reading, and what would I see in your phonics sessions?
Systematic synthetic phonics through the school's validated scheme, fidelity to it, decodable books matched to sounds, and keep-up (not catch-up) support.
Your interview lesson is with a class you've never met. How will you plan and deliver it?
Plan from the class info provided, keep it simple with checks for learning, set routines in the first minute — and debrief honestly afterwards. Reflection is scored.

Listen calmly, don't ask leading questions, never promise secrecy, record their words verbatim and tell the DSL the same day. Never investigate yourself.
What would you do if you were concerned about a colleague's behaviour towards a pupil?
Report to the headteacher without delay — or the chair of governors if it concerns the head. KCSIE's low-level concerns and whistleblowing routes exist for exactly this.
What is every adult's responsibility for safeguarding in a school?
'Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility.' Know the DSL by role, the latest KCSIE, and that your duty is to report concerns promptly — not to judge how serious they are.
