How Education interviews are run in 2026
- School interviews are usually a half-day on site: a taught lesson observation with a real class, a pupil panel or tour, then a formal panel with senior leaders and often a governor.
- Safeguarding questions are asked at every school interview under safer recruitment rules — a weak safeguarding answer sinks an otherwise strong candidate.
- Expect tasks alongside the interview: data or in-tray exercises for leadership roles, micro-teach sessions in FE and HE, and pre-recorded video screening at some trusts and agencies.

A child starts to disclose something that worries you. What do you do — and what must you never do?
Listen calmly, don't ask leading questions, never promise secrecy, record their words verbatim and tell the DSL the same day. Never investigate yourself.
What would you do if you were concerned about a colleague's behaviour towards a pupil?
Report to the headteacher without delay — or the chair of governors if it concerns the head. KCSIE's low-level concerns and whistleblowing routes exist for exactly this.
What is every adult's responsibility for safeguarding in a school?
'Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility.' Know the DSL by role, the latest KCSIE, and that your duty is to report concerns promptly — not to judge how serious they are.
How do you manage low-level disruption so it never becomes high-level?
Named routines beat theory: entry routines, positive framing, take-up time, consistent consequences — all inside the school's own behaviour policy.
How do you adapt your practice for pupils with SEND without lowering expectations?
Adaptive teaching, not easier worksheets: scaffolds you plan to remove, pre-taught vocabulary, and working with the SENCO and any EHCP targets.
A parent challenges you angrily about how you've handled their child. How do you respond?
Listen first, stay professional, don't get defensive, agree a follow-up — and know when to bring in a senior colleague rather than soldier on alone.
