The questions to expect
Walk me through building a risk register for a business area from scratch.
Method matters: scope the processes, workshop with the people who run them, rate inherent risk, assess controls, land on residual risk with named owners. Then keep it alive.
Explain risk appetite in plain terms — and tell me about helping a business define or actually apply it.
How much risk we'll accept in pursuit of objectives, made measurable. The strong answer shows appetite driving a real decision — something declined or accepted because of it.
Tell me about persuading the first line to own a risk they'd rather ignore.
Translate risk into their language — customer harm, cost, career consequences — and make ownership easy with a clear action. Nagging isn't influence; framing is.
Describe a control you designed or strengthened after an incident or near miss.
Root cause first, then the control: preventive over detective where possible, proportionate, and tested. Show the incident type hasn't recurred.
A high-severity risk lands on your desk two days before the board risk committee. What do you do?
No burying, no panic: rapid assessment, immediate mitigations, honest paper to the committee with what you know, don't know, and are doing. Composure is the test.
Give an example of putting numbers on a risk that others could only describe qualitatively.
Show the quantification craft — scenario analysis, loss data, ranges rather than false precision — and how the number changed the priority or the spend.
Why risk management? What keeps second-line work interesting for you?
The genuine hooks: seeing the whole business, the investigative puzzle, quiet saves nobody notices. Show you can hold independence without needing to be popular.
How would you assess AI and model risk as your company embeds AI into decisions?2026
Treat it as model risk grown up: inventory the use cases, test for bias and drift, demand explainability where decisions affect customers, and keep human override real.
Tell me about influencing a senior stakeholder who disagreed with your recommendation.
Show you understood their objection before countering it, brought evidence, and gave them a route to agree without losing face.
Estimate the size of the UK market for takeaway coffee.
Structure out loud: population, segment by habit, cups per week, price per cup. Round numbers, state assumptions, sense-check the total at the end.
Describe a time your analysis changed a decision that was already heading the other way.
The result is the reversed decision. Show the analysis briefly, then spend time on how you landed it with the people who'd already made up their minds.
You're mid-way through a project and realise the original plan won't deliver. What do you do?
Bad news travels first-class: size the gap, build options, tell the sponsor early with a recommendation. Hiding a slipping plan is the failure they're screening for.
