What they assess

The questions to expect

A retail bank is losing younger customers to fintechs. How would you develop its response strategy?

Diagnose before prescribing: why are they leaving, which segments, what's the economic damage? Then options — compete, partner, acquire, launch — with criteria to choose.

Should a European airline enter a new overseas domestic market? Structure your assessment.

Market entry frame: market size and growth, competition, regulation, capability fit, entry mode, economics. Close with what evidence would change your answer.

Tell me about a piece of strategic analysis you owned end to end. What did it conclude and what happened?

Pick work with a real decision at the end. Frame, method, conclusion, adoption — and be honest about what the organisation did with it.

Describe starting with a hypothesis the data then disproved. What did you do?

This tests intellectual honesty: show you killed your own idea fast, told the client or sponsor, and pivoted the work. Attachment to hypotheses is the failure mode.

Tell me about a recommendation where the numbers pointed one way and judgement another.

Name what the model couldn't see — execution risk, brand, politics, timing — and how you weighed it explicitly rather than fudging the numbers.

Describe distilling months of analysis into a message a board could absorb in ten minutes.

One governing thought, three supports, evidence in the appendix. Show the discipline of what you cut — that's the skill being tested.

Why strategy work specifically, rather than broader consulting or operating roles?

Show you love the question-shaping end of problems and accept the trade-off: influence through analysis and persuasion rather than direct control.

AI has compressed research and analysis from weeks to days. Where does a strategy consultant add value now?2026

Asking the non-obvious question, stress-testing AI output against reality, and building conviction in the room. Speed of synthesis is now table stakes — say what sits above it.

Tell me about influencing a senior stakeholder who disagreed with your recommendation.

Show you understood their objection before countering it, brought evidence, and gave them a route to agree without losing face.

Estimate the size of the UK market for takeaway coffee.

Structure out loud: population, segment by habit, cups per week, price per cup. Round numbers, state assumptions, sense-check the total at the end.

Describe a time your analysis changed a decision that was already heading the other way.

The result is the reversed decision. Show the analysis briefly, then spend time on how you landed it with the people who'd already made up their minds.

You're mid-way through a project and realise the original plan won't deliver. What do you do?

Bad news travels first-class: size the gap, build options, tell the sponsor early with a recommendation. Hiding a slipping plan is the failure they're screening for.
