The questions to expect
Which legislation underpins your practice, and how did it shape a recent decision you made?
Children Act 1989/2004 and Children and Families Act 2014 for children's; Care Act 2014 and Mental Capacity Act for adults. Then one decision where the law framed your reasoning.
A referral raises concerns about a child, but the family says everything is fine and won't engage. Talk us through your approach.
Thresholds and triangulation: see the child alone, check with school and health, respectful persistence with the family, escalate to strategy discussion if needed.
Tell us about working with a hostile or resistant family while keeping the child or adult at the centre.
Honest about the hostility, professional curiosity anyway: how you kept visiting, kept seeing the person, and separated the parents' anger from the child's needs.
Describe an assessment where your analysis changed the plan — what did you weigh and how did you reach your judgement?
Show analysis, not description: the competing explanations you held, evidence for each, and why you landed where you did. That's the professional skill.
Tell us about a decision of yours that was challenged — by a manager, a court or a family. How did you respond?
Non-defensive: you re-examined your reasoning, held it or changed it on evidence, and stayed respectful. Court-craft and challenge are part of the job.
How do you use supervision and reflective practice — really, not on paper?
A live example: a case where supervision shifted your thinking or caught drift. Panels can tell rehearsed 'I value supervision' from the real thing.
How do Social Work England's professional standards show up in your day-to-day practice?
Pick two standards and ground them: promoting rights and wellbeing in a real case, maintaining CPD records. Named framework plus lived example.
Why social work — and why this local authority now?
Your honest route in, then homework: their Ofsted/CQC rating, improvement journey, practice model (e.g. Signs of Safety). Applying to THEM, not just a job.
Councils are rolling out AI tools for case recording and minute-taking. Where do they help, and what must stay human judgement?2026
Drafting and admin, freeing time for families — but analysis, risk decisions and the relationship are yours, and you check every generated word.
How do you manage a high caseload without losing sight of the people in it?
Risk-based prioritisation, honest escalation when unsafe, and a named method for keeping visits meaningful. Martyrdom is not the right answer.
What does person-centred care mean to you in practice?
Start with the person, not the diagnosis: their preferences, routines and choices driving the support. One real example beats the textbook definition.
You notice unexplained bruising on someone you support. What do you do?
Record what you see factually, report to your manager or safeguarding lead the same shift, don't investigate yourself. Going to the colleague first fails the question.
