What they assess

The questions to expect

Tell me about a time you had to sell an architecture that nobody initially wanted.

Influence is half the job. Show how you translated trade-offs for each audience and moved people to consensus — or adapted when they were right.

Describe the most significant architectural decision you've made and the trade-offs you accepted.

Start with the problem, not the pattern. Name what you gave up — cost, flexibility, time — and how the decision aged.

Tell me about a time you chose the boring technology over the exciting one.

Pragmatism reads as seniority: team skills, operability and support contracts beat novelty. Show the fashionable option you declined and why.

Describe getting up to speed on a technology you'd never used, well enough to make a recommendation the business bet on.

Show your evaluation method — spike, reference calls, failure-mode reading — and the confidence level you honestly attached to the advice.

How would you integrate a legacy on-premise system with a new cloud platform? Walk through the options and where each breaks.

A whiteboard staple. Compare patterns (API layer, events, replication), then spend your time on failure points: latency, auth, data drift.

How do you record and communicate architecture decisions — ADRs, diagrams, review boards? Show me your practice.

Lightweight and real beats ceremonial: decisions with context and consequences, diagrams at the right altitude, review that helps rather than gates.

Buy, build or SaaS — how do you frame that decision for an executive audience?

Frame in their terms: total cost, differentiation, lock-in, time to value. One slide of options with a recommendation, not a technology tour.

Why architecture, rather than staying hands-on in engineering?

Show it as widening impact, not escaping code — and say how you stay technically credible (you'll be asked how current you really are).

How do you assess where AI and LLM components belong in an architecture — and where they don't?2026

Treat LLMs as a component with costs and failure modes: non-determinism, latency, data governance. A place you said no is your strongest evidence.

Tell me about a time you explained a technical problem to someone non-technical.

Pick a real audience and show the translation: the analogy you used, what you left out, and how you checked they got it.

Describe a production incident you were involved in. What did you do first?

Order matters: mitigate, communicate, then root-cause. Finish with the fix that stopped it happening again.

Walk me through a technical decision you made that you later reversed.

Reversing well is the skill. Show what new information arrived, how fast you acted on it, and what the reversal cost.
