The questions to expect
Tell me about the most involved installation you've done — first and second fix. What was your part?
Pick a job with some complexity — three-phase, containment runs, a full rewire — and be specific about what you personally installed and to what spec.
Walk me through the fault that took you longest to trace. How did you find it in the end?
Show the method, not luck: splitting the circuit, testing systematically, ruling things out. The logic you narrate is what they're hiring.
Tell me about a time your testing found a problem someone else had left behind.
A real find — a borrowed neutral, missing CPC, wrong polarity — plus how you recorded and reported it. Shows you test properly rather than tick boxes.
Tell me about a time you refused to energise or carry on until something was made safe.
Electrical work is safety-critical — they want proof you'll hold the line. Show the calm conversation and the fix, not a row.
Talk me through your tickets: ECS card grade, 18th Edition, NVQ, AM2, any testing qualification like the 2391.
Know exactly what you hold and the card it entitles you to (Gold Card for Installation Electrician). If you're part-way to something, say what's booked.
Take me through safe isolation, step by step, exactly as you'd do it on site.
This is the classic competence check. Prove-test-prove with a voltage indicator and proving unit, lock off, retain the key, warning signage — miss no steps.
What's your sequence of dead tests before you'd energise a new circuit?
Continuity of protective conductors, ring continuity, insulation resistance, polarity — in order, with why. Expect a practical version of this at trade-test stage.
Why the electrical trade — and where do you want to take it: testing, design, supervision?
A genuine answer about the craft plus a direction of travel. Ambition towards 2391 testing or supervising reads as someone worth investing in.
EV chargers, solar and battery storage are reshaping domestic and commercial work. What experience or training do you have there?2026
Any exposure counts — a charger install course, solar work, reading up on G98/G99. If none yet, name the course you'd do first; this work is where demand is.
Which cards and tickets do you hold — CSCS and any trade-specific ones — and are they all in date?
Bring the actual cards. Know every expiry date, and if something's lapsed, say what's booked to renew it — an expired ticket can't start on site.
Tell me about a time you spotted a hazard on site before it hurt someone. What did you do?
A real, small example is perfect: what you saw, making it safe or fencing it off, and telling the supervisor. Reporting is the part they're listening for.
You're told to crack on with a task you believe is unsafe. Talk me through exactly what you do.
Stop, say why calmly, suggest the safe alternative, and escalate if pushed. Employers are testing whether you'll actually refuse — say plainly that you would.
How to prepare for a electrician interview in the UK
Bring your ECS card, 18th Edition certificate and NVQ/AM2 evidence — UK employers verify cards before anything else, and many add a practical trade test. Rehearse safe isolation out loud; it's the most common competence check.
How Construction & Trades interviews are run in 2026
- Interviews are short and practical: cards and tickets are checked first (CSCS, ECS, CISRS, Gas Safe), then trade questions — and many employers finish with a practical trade test or a paid trial day on site.
- Safety scenarios decide it. Expect at least one 'what would you do' on a hazard or unsafe instruction; honest talk about near-misses reads far better than claiming a perfect record.
