Tell me about the most complex scaffold you've put up — the job, the design, your part in the gang.
Name the type — independent, birdcage, cantilever — and whether it was a design job. Being clear on your role (labourer, Part 1, Part 2) builds trust.
Tell me about a moment at height when you or a workmate cut a corner — and what happened next.
Honesty wins here. Show the correction — clipping on, re-establishing the safe zone, the conversation afterwards. Zero-harm talk without a story rings hollow.
Scaffolding gangs live on trust. Tell me about a gang you clicked with — and one you didn't. What was the difference?
Talk about rhythm, calling loads clearly, watching each other's backs. Being honest about a bad gang — and staying professional in it — shows maturity.
Tell me about a handover — getting a scaffold tagged and signed off. What was checked?
Show you know the process: complete to spec, inspected before first use, scafftag on, then the 7-day inspection cycle. Handover discipline is a safety answer.
What's your CISRS status — labourer, trainee, Part 1, Part 2, Advanced — and what's your route to the next card?
The CISRS card defines what you're allowed to do; know yours and the course dates for the next one. Employers fund progression for people who show up.
What does SG4 mean for how you actually work at height, day to day?
Talk the practical reality: advanced guardrail or scaffolders' step methods, clipping on outside the protected zone, never free-climbing. Regs turned into habits.
Tube and fitting versus system scaffold — what have you worked with, and how does the job change between them?
System scaffold is faster and dominates big contracts; tube and fitting still rules awkward structures. Experience in both — or hunger to learn the other — is the answer.

Even basic exposure counts — digital scafftags, inspection apps, drawings on a tablet. Showing you'll work with the tech rather than around it is enough.
Which cards and tickets do you hold — CSCS and any trade-specific ones — and are they all in date?
Bring the actual cards. Know every expiry date, and if something's lapsed, say what's booked to renew it — an expired ticket can't start on site.
Tell me about a time you spotted a hazard on site before it hurt someone. What did you do?
A real, small example is perfect: what you saw, making it safe or fencing it off, and telling the supervisor. Reporting is the part they're listening for.
You're told to crack on with a task you believe is unsafe. Talk me through exactly what you do.
Stop, say why calmly, suggest the safe alternative, and escalate if pushed. Employers are testing whether you'll actually refuse — say plainly that you would.
