Tell me about a drawing package you produced against a deadline. How did you keep quality up at speed?

Volume plus accuracy is the job: how many sheets, your checking routine before issue, and the deadline met. Templates and title-block discipline are worth mentioning.

What's the most complex model or assembly you've built? What made it hard?

Show modelling strategy — breaking the assembly down, managing references, keeping rebuild times sane. Screenshots or a portfolio ready on a laptop help enormously.

Tell me about an error you caught in a drawing just before issue — or one that got out. What changed in your checking?

Everyone's had one escape. The strong answer is the personal checklist that exists because of it — dims against model, revision cloud discipline, print-and-check.

Engineers mark up changes all day and priorities shift. Tell me about keeping several of them happy at once.

Show a visible queue — asking which job moves, giving honest turnaround times, flagging when a markup contradicts the model. Calm service under churn is the skill.

Which CAD packages do you use and to what depth — and how quickly have you picked up a new one?

Be precise: daily driver, competent, exposure. A story of cross-training (AutoCAD to Revit, SolidWorks to Inventor) answers the real worry — adaptability.

How do you manage revisions and issue control so nobody builds from a superseded drawing?

Talk registers, revision letters, transmittals or the document system you've used. One horror story you prevented shows why you take it seriously.

Talk me through checking a finished drawing to standard — views, sections, dimensions, tolerances.

Reference the drawing standard you work to (BS 8888 or company standard) and walk a real checking order. Expect a marked-up drawing test at interview — practise one.

Why draughting — and do you want to stay a specialist or grow towards design engineering?

Both routes are respected — the craft of drawings or the ladder to design. Employers just want your direction to match the role, so ask what progression looks like.

Automated drawing generation and AI assistants are coming into CAD suites. How do you see the technician role changing?2026

The confident answer: automation does the repetitive sheets, technicians move up to model quality, standards and checking. Any scripting or template-building you've done, say it.

Walk me through one project or piece of work you're proud of — the engineering problem, your approach, and what you'd do differently now.

Pick one job and go deep: the constraint that made it hard, the decision you made, the numbers that prove it worked. 'What I'd change' shows growth, not weakness.

Explain something technical from your work to me as if I'm not an engineer.

Choose one concept, use an everyday analogy, and stop before you over-explain. They're testing whether you can talk to customers, operators and managers.

Tell me about a time something failed — in service, in test or in production. How did you get to the root cause?

Show a method — 5 whys, fishbone, elimination — not a guess that happened to be right. End with the fix that stopped it recurring.
