Walk me through setting a new job from the drawing to an approved first-off.

Sequence it like you do it: read the drawing, workholding, tools and offsets, prove the program, first-off measured and signed off. This is the core competence check.

Tell me about a program you wrote or edited at the machine — and a bug you caught before it cost a part.

Name the control (Fanuc, Heidenhain, Mazatrol) and the edit — a wrong offset call, a feed error. Catching it in dry run shows the habits that protect spindles.

Tell me about catching a batch drifting out of tolerance mid-run — or the scrapped part that taught you the most.

In-process checks are the story: measuring at intervals, spotting tool wear trends, adjusting offsets before scrap. Owning one scrapped part honestly builds trust.

Tell me about improving a cycle time or tool life on a job you ran regularly.

Numbers make it: the seconds saved per part or the tool lasting twice as long, and the change that did it — inserts, speeds and feeds, a path edit. Small gains at volume are money.

How do you prove out a new or edited program safely?

Dry run above the work, single block with rapid override down, distance-to-go watched on first cuts. Saying the crash you're preventing shows you understand why.

What machines, controls and CAM have you run — mills, lathes, multi-axis?

Be specific and honest: machine types, control families, any CAM (Fusion, Mastercam). Setters who overclaim get found out at the machine on day one.

How do you hold a tight tolerance across a long run — thermal drift, tool wear, measurement discipline?

Warm-up cycles, offset compensation as tools wear, calibrated instruments, letting parts cool before measuring. Micron talk, made practical, is what convinces.

Why machining — and what sort of work do you want more of: setting, programming, one-offs, production?

Pride in parts measured in microns is the genuine core. A direction — towards programming or complex one-offs — tells them where you'll add value in a year.

Bar feeders, robot loading and lights-out running are standard ambitions now. What's your experience with automated cells?2026

Any exposure counts — bar-fed lathes, pallet systems, minding multiple machines. Show you think in process stability terms: what has to be true for a machine to run unattended.

Walk me through one project or piece of work you're proud of — the engineering problem, your approach, and what you'd do differently now.

Pick one job and go deep: the constraint that made it hard, the decision you made, the numbers that prove it worked. 'What I'd change' shows growth, not weakness.

Explain something technical from your work to me as if I'm not an engineer.

Choose one concept, use an everyday analogy, and stop before you over-explain. They're testing whether you can talk to customers, operators and managers.

Tell me about a time something failed — in service, in test or in production. How did you get to the root cause?

Show a method — 5 whys, fishbone, elimination — not a guess that happened to be right. End with the fix that stopped it recurring.
