What they assess

The questions to expect

Tell me about taking over a shift team — especially one with people who'd been there longer than you. How did you win them?

Respect first, changes second: learning the lines from the team, backing them visibly, then raising standards. Name one person you won round and how.

Tell me about a line or shift that was consistently missing its numbers. What did you change?

Diagnose before acting: where the OEE losses actually were (changeovers, minor stops, absence), the one or two fixes, and the numbers after. Data makes this story.

Tell me about enforcing a safety rule when it slowed the shift down and people pushed back.

The test is whether output pressure bends you. Show the line held, the reason explained rather than imposed, and your manager backed after — not before — you acted.

Walk me through a major line-down on your shift. What did you fix, what did you escalate, and when?

Escalating well is a skill, not a failure: what you tried first, the time-box you gave it, and the call made with clear information. Sitting on a problem is the wrong answer.

How do you run a shift handover and a start-of-shift meeting that actually work?

Concrete beats theory: what's on your handover sheet, the five minutes at the board — safety, quality, plan, problems — and how you keep it to five minutes.

Which production metrics do you manage the shift by — and which one do you look at first each morning?

OEE, right-first-time, schedule adherence, absence — pick your real set and justify the first-look one. Fluency with yesterday's numbers is what marks out a real supervisor.

Two agency workers don't show, you're one skilled operator down, and the order book is full. Plan the shift for me.

Prioritise ruthlessly: safety-critical stations covered first, flex your multi-skilled people, tell planning early what won't get made. A calm, ordered answer wins.

Why supervision — what do you get from running the shift that you didn't get on the tools?

The honest answer is the team and the shift's number being yours. Acknowledge what you gave up — the simplicity of your own station — and why it's worth it.

Digital dashboards and AI scheduling tools are arriving on shop floors. How have you used data or systems to run a better shift?2026

Any real example counts — live OEE screens, andon data, skills matrices in a system. Show the habit of acting on the data same-shift rather than reviewing it next week.

Walk me through one project or piece of work you're proud of — the engineering problem, your approach, and what you'd do differently now.

Pick one job and go deep: the constraint that made it hard, the decision you made, the numbers that prove it worked. 'What I'd change' shows growth, not weakness.

Explain something technical from your work to me as if I'm not an engineer.

Choose one concept, use an everyday analogy, and stop before you over-explain. They're testing whether you can talk to customers, operators and managers.

Tell me about a time something failed — in service, in test or in production. How did you get to the root cause?

Show a method — 5 whys, fishbone, elimination — not a guess that happened to be right. End with the fix that stopped it recurring.
