What they assess

The questions to expect

Tell me about a time you spotted a defect or something out of spec on the line. What did you do?

The right shape: stopped or flagged it straight away, told the team leader, quarantined the product. Catching it — and reporting it — is exactly what they're hiring.

Tell me about a near miss or hazard you've seen at work. What happened next?

A small, true example with the reporting step included. Employers read 'never seen one' as 'never looked' — honesty here builds trust fast.

The work can be repetitive and the targets are real. How do you keep your concentration and rate up through a shift?

Give your actual techniques — routine, micro-checks, taking breaks properly — and a record: targets hit, low error rate, attendance. Consistency is the product.

Tell me about covering a different line, machine or shift at short notice.

Flexibility is a hiring criterion in most plants. Show willingness plus how fast you picked up the new station — and that you asked when unsure.

What checks would you expect to do at the start of a shift or a product changeover?

Think out loud: right materials and paperwork, machine guards in place, first-off checked against spec, workspace clean. Naming first-off inspection scores highly.

Have you worked anywhere that ran 5S or lean? What does good housekeeping actually do for a line?

Connect it to outcomes: no hunting for tools, hazards visible, faster changeovers. If you've not had 5S formally, describe keeping your own station right.

Your machine starts jamming mid-run. Talk me through what you do — and what you never do.

Stop, make safe, report — never reach into a running machine or bodge a guard. Saying the 'never' part out loud is what the interviewer is waiting for.

What are you looking for from a factory job — and what would make you stay somewhere for years?

Stability, a good team, a route to skilled roles — honest answers are fine. Employers are trying to predict turnover; showing you want to settle and progress helps you.

More lines now have robots, cobots and screens with digital work instructions. How do you feel about working alongside that?2026

Positive and practical: any experience with scanners, HMIs or tablets counts. Operatives who'll happily learn the tech are the ones kept on as lines automate.

Walk me through one project or piece of work you're proud of — the engineering problem, your approach, and what you'd do differently now.

Pick one job and go deep: the constraint that made it hard, the decision you made, the numbers that prove it worked. 'What I'd change' shows growth, not weakness.

Explain something technical from your work to me as if I'm not an engineer.

Choose one concept, use an everyday analogy, and stop before you over-explain. They're testing whether you can talk to customers, operators and managers.

Tell me about a time something failed — in service, in test or in production. How did you get to the root cause?

Show a method — 5 whys, fishbone, elimination — not a guess that happened to be right. End with the fix that stopped it recurring.
