Tell me about work you've done that had to pass NDT or independent inspection. How did you make sure it would?

Talk prep, fit-up, following the WPS, and your own visual checks before the inspector's. A low repair rate is a number worth saying out loud.

Tell me about switching between processes or materials on one job — say heavy MIG work to TIG on thin stainless.

Show what actually changes: settings, technique, cleanliness discipline for stainless or aluminium. Range with honesty about your strongest process is ideal.

Tell me about working from fabrication drawings — and a time you caught an error before it was welded in.

Weld symbols, tolerances, checking dims before tacking — and the query raised rather than the assumption made. Catching a drawing error is a great story here.

Describe hot work somewhere awkward — confined space, at height, near something flammable. What controls were in place?

Permits, fire watch, extraction, gas monitoring where it applies — named specifically. Fume control awareness is increasingly checked in UK shops; mention it.

What codings do you hold, and tell me about your last weld test — process, position, how it was examined.

Know your certs precisely (standard, process, position, expiry). Expect a practical weld test on the day — many UK employers macro or bend-test the piece.

How do you control distortion on a fabrication?

Classic competence check: weld sequence, balancing, tacking and clamping, heat input control. A real example of pulling a job back true seals it.

MIG, TIG, stick — where would you choose each and why?

Keep it practical: production speed versus finish quality versus site conditions and wind. Choosing by the job, not by preference, is the mark of experience.

Why welding — and where do you want to take it: codings, pipework, inspection?

Pride in a visible, testable craft is the honest core. Naming a next step — a new coding, moving to pipe, CSWIP inspection one day — shows you're staying.

The strong answer is yes-and: happy to set, program and quality-check a cell, while the complex, one-off and repair work stays human. Adaptability keeps welders employed.

Walk me through one project or piece of work you're proud of — the engineering problem, your approach, and what you'd do differently now.

Pick one job and go deep: the constraint that made it hard, the decision you made, the numbers that prove it worked. 'What I'd change' shows growth, not weakness.

Explain something technical from your work to me as if I'm not an engineer.

Choose one concept, use an everyday analogy, and stop before you over-explain. They're testing whether you can talk to customers, operators and managers.

Tell me about a time something failed — in service, in test or in production. How did you get to the root cause?

Show a method — 5 whys, fishbone, elimination — not a guess that happened to be right. End with the fix that stopped it recurring.
